Hepatitis B is a potentially fatal liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It represents a major health problem worldwide. It can become chronic and carries a high risk of death from cirrhosis and liver cancer.
According to WHO estimates, 257 million people were chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus in 2015. The infection is considered chronic if the test results are positive for the surface antigen of the virus.
Although the endemicity of hepatitis B in Chile is low compared to international figures, the risk behaviors of certain populations continue to be a factor to consider and therefore, it is very necessary to have diagnostic options for the early detection of this disease.
Abbott’s DETERMINE™ HBsAg 2 is the most sensitive rapid diagnostic test in the world that detects the hepatitis B surface antigen and can be used from serum, plasma or whole blood.
