Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum that results in substantial morbidity and mortality. It is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is usually transmitted through contact with infectious ulcers on the genitals, through blood transfusions, or through mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy.
Syphilis is usually diagnosed based on history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Uncomplicated syphilis can be easily cured with antibiotics. However, if left untreated, the disease persists for years and causes serious health problems. The WHO estimates that in 2016, there were 5.6 million new cases of syphilis worldwide in adolescents and adults aged 15 to 49 years. According to provisional data from MINSAL, 5,961 cases of syphilis were reported in 2017, which represents an increase of 42.3% compared to the previous year. It should be noted that this figure is double the number of cases reported ten years ago.
Determine™ Syphilis TP is a qualitative, visually readable in vitro immunoassay used to detect Treponema pallidum antibodies in human serum, plasma and whole blood.
