VRS

Since the discovery of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in 1956, its impact as the main cause of acute lower respiratory infections requiring hospitalization in infants has been demonstrated worldwide.

The respiratory syncytial virus infects about 50% of children in their first year of life and by the age of 2, practically all have had contact with the virus. It is estimated that 2-3% of the first infections require hospital care due to their severity. For this reason, it is considered the main agent causing childhood hospitalizations due to acute lower respiratory infection (LRTI) and the cause of the increase in demand for health care that occurs every winter in Chile.

Given the impact that infection by this virus has on the health system and on the health of our children, Microbac makes the BinaxNOW® RSV card available to its clients. This test is a rapid in vitro immunocartography assay used to detect respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) fusion protein antigen in nasal wash and nasopharyngeal swab samples from symptomatic patients. This assay is designed to facilitate the diagnosis of RSV infections in patients under 5 years of age.
